Or do you find it already expensive enough?
And your bill is going to rise even higher ...
But we want to stop that!

Why are you going to have to pay more?
Belgium will close its nuclear power plants in 2025. Today, they produce a large proportion of our electricity, and so we have to get that electricity from other sources. Those can be windmills, batteries, traditional power stations, etc ... To ensure that they will be here on time, Belgium will set up a capacity market. Elia will calculate the maximum electricity demand that we will need in the coming years, our peak power demand. And Elia will organize an auction to find the cheapest sources that together can deliver that peak power demand at any time. The higher the peak power demand, the more sources we will need, and the more expensive it becomes.
The cost of that auction will be an extra cost for you on your electricity bill. That can mount up to more than 100 euros / year!
The peak power demand will be calculated based on what all Belgians will consume together at the same time. It is also assumed that we, as individuals, do not want to actively help at home to reduce that peak power demand. But we think differently about that!
What can you do about this?
We want to show that there are people who want to actively help to reduce the peak power demand. For this you would only need to save on your electricity consumption for a few hours per year. We will of course not put you in the dark, you can continue to watch TV and keep using your internet / WIFI. All of that doesn't consume a lot of power. We are going to adjust your fuse box a bit to ensure that during those few hours a year, your large consumers in the house do not accidentally switch on. We are talking about your hot water boiler, your oven, your iron, ... Things that you don't really need during those short periods in time during peak demand.
Therefore there will be no increase in your electricity bill for you!
What are we going to do then?
With our initiative we want to show that there are many people who want to participate. We want to show that we can actively help together, and that we should not be forgotten in the design of that capacity market. We don't want to 'just pay the invoice'. We want to be able to choose how high that invoice can be. And otherwise we will intervene ourselves.
